The Future of Hybrid Drums No One is Talking About
What if your acoustic kit could switch between acoustic and electronic at a moment's notice — same shells, same feel, same response — without a single trigger clip or mesh head in sight? Not a Roland VAD, not a DW-E kit, not a trigger bolted to your snare. Your actual drums, exactly as they are, just... both.
We're closer to that than most people realise. A handful of companies are already doing pieces of it, and when you start joining the dots between what they've each built, it gets genuinely exciting. But first — why normal triggers aren't quite enough.
The Ceiling of Traditional Triggers
Triggers have been around a long time and they're good at what they do. But they haven't fundamentally changed much since their release — we went from the early Simmons pads to progressively better and better technology, and then things sort of plateaued.
At their core, a trigger is a piezo sensor. You hit the drum, it sends a signal, the module reads how hard you hit it and fires a sample. That's essentially it — on or off, louder or quieter.
Yes, modern triggers can differentiate between a centre hit, a rimshot, and a cross stick. But what they can't tell you is where on the drum you hit, or how you played it. Hit a cross stick and it fires the cross stick sound — but with no nuance of how you got there. Go for a centre shot and accidentally clip the rim, and it fires a rimshot regardless. All the subtlety that makes an acoustic kit feel alive just disappears.
That's the ceiling. And it's something that becomes more noticeable the more you gig with hybrid or electric setups — you never quite play at a hundred percent because the kit can't fully respond like a real one.
Evans Sensory Percussion — The Most Underrated Thing in Hybrid Drums
Evans — yes, the drum head company — partnered with a company called Sunhouse to create the Sensory Percussion system, and it's completely unlike a normal trigger.
The sensor itself clips to your drum using rear-mount clamps, and it's tiny. But what it detects is a completely different class of information — three things simultaneously:
- Timbre — where on the drum you hit. Edge, centre, rimshot, dead centre, anywhere in between. The sensor can tell the difference between all of it.
- Velocity — how hard you played. Same as a standard trigger, but now combined with timbre, which is where things get interesting.
- Speed — how fast you played, independently of how hard. A fast light buzz roll reads differently to a heavy loud one.
Those three things together immediately solve most of the problems traditional triggers have. And then you can map all of it however you like in the software.
The sensor connects to a dedicated audio interface Sunhouse call the Portal — a small box about the size of a Yamaha EAD10 that sits next to your laptop. From there, the Sensory Percussion software (currently V2) takes over, and you can do pretty much anything you want with any sounds you like.
I got a chance to play it at the UK Drum Show a few years back when it first launched. Not the ideal environment to properly test anything, but even then it was clear what it was capable of. The people who've bought it or been endorsed by it are doing incredible things with it. What's baffling is how little it's crossed over into function drumming, session work, or hybrid setups like mine.
They've also now released a cymbal line using the same technology. Electronic cymbals are almost universally a compromise — they're either metallic and weird sounding, or quiet and rubbery. The Sensory Percussion cymbal range looks like it applies the same contactless sensing to cymbals, and if it works as well as the drum sensors, that's genuinely a big deal.
DWE — Wireless, Zero Latency, and What It Means
This one came out of Roland buying DW and producing a fully wireless drum kit with zero latency. It's a DW Collector Series shell pack with triggers built in — no cables, completely wireless.
I played this at the same UK Drum Show, in one of their private demo booths. Again, not the perfect environment, but you could feel immediately that there was no latency and no cables to deal with. Roland's flagship V-Drum lineup — including the newer V71 and V51 — works within the DWE ecosystem, and those kits are genuinely some of the best electric kits available right now.
The core concept is what matters here: you get a kit that looks exactly like an acoustic drum kit. If you turn up to a gig with a sound limiter, you swap to mesh heads, pull out your cymbal alternatives, and you're done. No plugging anything in. Your laptop connects to the interface, the interface goes to the sound engineer, and that's it.
Jobeky — Invisible Triggers in Any Kit You Own
Jobeky are a UK-based company that build internal trigger systems, and they're the piece of this puzzle I find most practically useful — partly because I own some and gig with them.
The concept is simple: you buy the triggers, open up your drums, mount the trigger system inside, and run a jack output through the air vent hole that's in every drum. The lug screws hold everything in place. No drilling, no permanent modifications — it just lives inside the drum invisibly, and from the outside it looks completely acoustic.
It uses the same piezo-based technology as any other trigger, so the ceiling is the same as we talked about earlier. But the benefit is flexibility — you can put them in any kit you own, and use them with any module you already have. If you've already got an electric kit and want to make it look acoustic, these get you there. And as a small independent UK business, they're worth supporting.
The Dream Setup — What Happens When You Combine All Three
Here's where it gets properly exciting. On their own, each of these systems has a meaningful limitation. But put them together and something different emerges.
DWE gives you a wireless, zero-latency electric kit that requires nothing more than swapping heads to go acoustic. Jobeky means you're not locked to a DW shell pack — you can put that wireless trigger concept into any kit you love. And Sensory Percussion on top of that means the kit doesn't just work electrically, it feels and responds like a real acoustic drum, whether you're playing it acoustically or not.
Suddenly you've got your favourite drum kit — the one you actually want to play — that can be acoustic or electric, is completely wireless, has zero latency, and responds with the nuance of a real acoustic instrument. The only giveaway that it's electric at all is probably the hi-hat mount from the Sensory Percussion system, which has to go up and over the stand in a way that's visually distinct. But that's it.
From what I can tell, nobody has actually combined all three of these yet. They're independent systems from companies that aren't going to be openly publishing how their tech works. But as soon as competition enters any of these spaces — particularly Sensory Percussion — prices come down and options expand. Electric kits went from one or two expensive options to an enormous range at every price point. The same will happen here eventually.
